New Westminster Mayor Jonathan Cote wants us to “geek out” on data.

That’s at least how Cote joked in a tweet yesterday after he crunched TransLink data that showed driving is down in Metro Vancouver, especially in New West.

“Driving is down in almost every city in Metro Vancouver,” Cote tweeted. “Below is the ranking of cities that saw the biggest decrease in driving mode share between 2011 and 2017: 1. West Vancouver -15.4% 2. New Westminster -7.9% 3. Coquitlam -7.5%.”

Cote provided an example of the driving mode share in New Westminster going from 58.2% in 2011 to 50.3% in 2017.

The data comes from TransLink’s 2017 Trip Diary, a household survey conducted by the transit agency that used online and smartphone questionnaires to quiz about 2.5% of the households in the region on their travelling habits.

Cote is chair of the Mayors' Council on Transportation and a fierce advocate for transit.
