The New Westminster Police Department is warning drivers to avoid using Royal Avenue after a driver struck a pedestrian early Thursday morning.

A collision reconstruction team is on site at Royal Avenue and Fourth Street across from New Westminster City Hall after a pedestrian was struck around 5:45 a.m. and sent to hospital.

“NWPD patrol members and paramedics arrived on scene and transported the male to Royal Columbian Hospital with life-threatening injuries,” police said in a news release. “The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with police. At this time, it does not appear that drugs or alcohol appear to be a factor in this collision. The intersection of Royal Avenue and 4th Street will remain closed as accident investigators process the scene.”

The NWPD is appealing to the public for CCTV and dashcam footage. Anyone with information is asked to call the New Westminster Police at (604) 525-5411.

“Please avoid the area and find alternate routes,” says tweet from the NWPD Twitter account.
