Drivers headed east along Eighth Avenue in New Westminster were rerouted July 2, after a car lost control at York Street and East Eighth Avenue, crashing into several parked vehicles.

Around 11 p.m. on July 2, a grey 2004 Buick Century travelling west on East Eighth Avenue lost control and collided with a parked trailer near York Street.

"The initial collision caused the vehicle to spin and strike another parked vehicle and a city parking sign, which was ripped from the ground," the police report stated.

New Westminster police officers and emergency services were quick to the scene, attending to the driver of the car, a 65-yearold man, and closing down a portion of the busy avenue from Cumberland Street past York Street.

According to Staff Sgt. Paul Hyland, the driver received only minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Hyland said excessive speed is believed to be the cause of the accident, and police are still investigating the crash at this time.
