Douglas wins badminton players of the week

Logan Campbell and Kathleen Lougheed swept the PacWest badminton players of the week awards following the second tournament of the season in Nanaimo last weekend

A pair of Douglas College students picked individual awards for PacWest badminton players of the week.

Logan Campbell was named the men’s athlete of the week after turning in another outstanding performance for the Douglas Royals at the Vancouver Island University Invitational.  Campbell, in his third year of eligibility and originally from Calgary, extended his unbeaten streak to 24 consecutive games.

Campbell continued his unbeaten run, partnering with Luo Wei for first place in the men’s doubles event before teaming up with Rita Lin for first in the mixed doubles event.

Campbell has now won all four events that he has entered in this season.

“Logan is a real talent and has the potential to be one of the best doubles players in Canada,” said Douglas head coach Al Mawani.

First-year student athlete Kathleen Lougheed won the female athlete of the week for a second straight badminton tournament.

Lougheed continued her strong start to the season by leading the Royals to first place at the Invitational.  The Calgary native also improved her season record to a perfect 24 wins and 0 losses, winning both singles and women’s doubles events.

This past weekend, Lougheed won her second straight women’s singles event and then teamed up with Rita Lin to win their second women’s doubles event.

“Kathleen has been fantastic for the Royals both on and off court,” said Mawani.  “She has been a real leader and role model to the younger players on the team.”

PacWest badminton resumes play in the new year at the third scheduled tournament on Feb. 1 and 2, at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.
