Christmas doughnuts

JJ Lee, author of the critically acclaimed novel The Measure of a Man makes Christmas doughnuts that are much loved by his twin boys. He only makes a half-batch on Christmas morning so he doesn't have to spend too much time in the kitchen.

"They aren't special or unique except that I make them, and we always gobble them up for breakfast," he said. "Plus it is eggless, which works for one of my sons, who has an allergy to eggs."

1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour One-quarter teaspoon of salt

1 teaspoon of baking powder

One-half teaspoon of baking soda

cinnamon

nutmeg

One-half cup of sugar (I usually use only two tablespoons as it can be too sweet)

One-quarter cup of butter worked in with your hands instead of eggs Maybe one-half cup of sour milk

Work it all together. I like to break them off and hand roll each into little discs, and I deepfry them.

A few I roll in sugar, but most I leave plain.
