The Douglas College Royals had a short stay atop the national men's volleyball rankings.

The Douglas College Royals had a short stay atop the national men's volleyball rankings.

The Royals split a weekend series with the Vancouver Island University Mariners last weekend but remained in first place by a six-point margin over the Nanaimo-based team.

The two-of-four points was enough to clinch top spot in the PacWest

Douglas dropped a five-set decision to VIU last Friday, before bouncing back with a 3-1 win the following day.

Andrew McWilliam, who is currently among the top three collegiate players in the country in kills, created nearly 50 points of total offence in the two matches against Vancouver Island.

McWilliam registered 19 kills, two blocks and three service aces in the Friday loss. He then made 17 kills, seven digs and seven aces in Saturday's victory.

Sam Shaw was also a factor in both matches, registering 24 total kills, including 11 in the Royals' win.

Andrew Robson had seven kills and seven blocks on Saturday.

Mark Vanderwal had 10 kill winners and seven digs in the opening game loss. Nick Bridle also had seven kills, five blocks and two aces in the Friday match.

Libero Jordan Or led the Royals in total digs, including 20 in the comeback win.

Last week, Red Deer College moved past Douglas College up from second to first place in national men's volleyball polling.

The Douglas men will close out the regular season against Capilano University.

The Royals are at home to the Blues on Friday, before finishing out the league schedule at the North Shore campus on Saturday. Game time for both matches is 8 p.m.

The Douglas women's volleyball team lost its weekend series to VIU in Nanaimo and is currently in sixth place, four points behind Capilano.

Douglas and Capilano will also finish out the league schedule on Friday and Saturday in a home-and-home series, beginning in New West at 6 p.m.
