The West End will go to the dogs if longtime New Westminster resident Diana Priestley has her way.
Priestley is urging the city to create a new off-leash dog park on the west side of the city. She suggested a site at the southeast corner of Grimston Park, where houses were torn down to make way for the reconfiguration of Sixth Avenue.
"Nobody uses this area in the park, either to play ball or to run with their children," she wrote in a letter to council. "It is not an appealing area, possessing neither playground furniture, plantings, nor pathways, and it forms an empty grassy slope between the lane at the back of the houses along that part of Nanaimo Street and Sixth Avenue leading to the Queensborough Bridge."
Coun. Chuck Puchmayr said the city has developed some great dog parks.
"I don't frequently use the dog parks, but I know people appreciate them," he said.
While the resident had suggested an off-leash area could be located in Grimston Park, Puchmayr believes an opportunity may exist in Moody Park.
Council referred the issue to staff.
