Developments win awards

The Maria Keary Cottages project is continuing with its winning ways.

Days after winning the top honour in the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver's Commercial Building Awards, the project at 305 Carnarvon St. took home two awards and a People's Choice award at the 40th annual Royal City Builders Awards on Wednesday night. In addition to being named the overall Royal City Builders Award winner as Building of the Year, Maria Keary Cottages also took home an award in the sustainability category.

The City of New Westminster and the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce presented the 40th annual Royal City Builders Awards, which honour outstanding projects completed in 2010. More than 100 people attended Wednesday's gala dinner at the Inn at the Quay.

Here are the winners for modern development:

- Commercial Renovation: Great Wall Tea Company

- Modern Residential: The Carlyle at Victoria Hill

- Modern Commercial: River Market

- Modern Institutional: New Westminster Youth Centre

Awards are also given out in heritage categories. This year's winners are:

- Exterior Heritage Renovation: 408 Garrett St.

- Exterior Heritage Restoration (The Heritage Shield): 1021 Third Ave.

- New Home Construction that Respects New Westminster Heritage: 206 Elgin St.

For the past several years, the Royal City Builders Awards have also been recognizing efforts in the Universal Access category. De Dutch Pannekoek House at 102-1035 Columbia St. took the award in the business category, while the New Westminster Youth Centre won in the facility category.

The winners are:

- Exterior Heritage Restoration (Shield) and Renovation: 408 Garrett St.

- New Home that Respects New Westminster Heritage: 1616 London St.

- Modern Institutional: 305 Carnarvon St., Maria Keary Cottages.

- Modern Residential/Commercial: Inter Urban at 14 Begbie St.

- Commercial Renovation: Pharmasave at 130-1005 Columbia St.
