The Literacy New Westminster Task Group is hosting a Money Skills workshop series to help New Westminster residents improve their financial literacy.
Attendees will learn about banking, budgeting, credit and consumerism. The workshop series is free.
It will take place at the New Westminster Public Library and run for three weeks on Thursday evenings from 6: 30 to 9 p.m. from Jan. 24 to Feb. 7. To register, contact Dawn Livera, literacy outreach coordinator, at [email protected] or call 604-525-9144, ext. 3658.
"This year, think about making it your New Year's resolution to get your finances in order," Ellen Heaney, chair of the Literacy New Westminster Task Group, said in a media release. "Literacy is so much more than just reading books. Financial literacy, or having the knowledge and resources to make good financial decisions, is an essential skill."
The New Westminster School District is also offering two Money Skills series for parents with school-aged children. A daytime series will be offered at Lord Kelvin Elementary this month, and an evening series will be offered at Richard McBride Elementary in February. The Money Skills series is a financial literacy program delivered by Family Services of Greater Vancouver with support from Vancity, the release says.
The Literacy New Westminster Task Group is a community network that works to identify local literacy strengths and challenges, and then create and implement a literacy action plan. The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month, except July and August. Anyone with an interest in literacy in New Westminster is welcome to attend the meetings.
