A 21-year-old Delta man with an extensive criminal record and an outstanding warrant for breaching parole was arrested Thursday night after a chase that started in Surrey ended in the garage of a New Westminster home.

Just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Surrey RCMP officers responded to a call about a van being stolen. Officers located the van on Scott Road and 103A Ave. and when police tried to get the man out of the car, the stolen van reversed back into the police car before the suspect fled.

Police caught up to the van near the Pattullo Bridge, but the van did not stop as it headed across the bridge to New Westminster

Police abandoned the pursuit and a short time later, New Westminster police located the van, which had run into the garage of a residence on Richmond Street. The driver fled on foot, but a New Westminster police dog obtained a track from the van and located the man, who was taken into custody.

The Delta man was scheduled to appear in Surrey provincial court on Friday.
