More Royal City residents have voted in the transit referendum than the last civic election, but there’s still time to get those ballots in – even if yours hasn’t come in the mail.
Metro Vancouver residents have until midnight on Friday, May 15 to request a voting package from Elections B.C. Registered voters have until May 29 to return the mail-in ballot, in which they’ll indicate whether or not they support the mayors’ council’s proposal to increase the provincial sales tax by 0.5 per cent to fund transit and transportation improvements in the region.
According to Elections B.C., there are 45,917 registered voters in New Westminster. As of May 6, Elections B.C. had screened 16,743 ballot packages from New West residents, which is 36.5 per cent of eligible voters – exceeding the 32.5 per cent voter turnout in New Westminster’s November 2014 municipal election.
As of May 6, 35.3 per cent of registered voters in Metro Vancouver had returned their mail-in ballots.
Metro Vancouver residents who are Canadian citizens, have lived in B.C. for at least six months and are registered to vote in B.C., live in Metro Vancouver and are 18 years or older on or before May 29 are eligible to vote.
