A local daycare provider is seeking to add 20 licensed before-and after-school care spaces to her facility.

Edith Ziolkiewicz, owner of Fraser Montessori Daycare at 1408 Fifth Ave., is proposing to provide 20 licensed spaces for before and after school care. This would require an amendment to the site's zoning, which was created to allow a group childcare centre with 50 spaces.

"The applicant is proposing to provide a licensed before and after school care program in response to requests from parents who require this care type and who have siblings in the existing licensed group child care program," said a report to council. "It would also enable children to transition between the programs, thus minimizing disruption to parents and children. The applicant is also responding to the need for this care type in the neighbourhood."

New Westminster city council recently received a preliminary report about the application. Staff anticipates council will consider the application in May, after the applicant makes a presentation to area residents' associations and the city's advisory planning commission reviews the application.
