The City of New Westminster has reached a tentative deal with its unionized employees.

The City of New Westminster and CUPE 387 reached a tentative agreement – a day after hundreds of unionized employees took a strike vote.

According to CUPE 387, the union and the city reached a tentative agreement on Tuesday night.

“No further details of the agreement will be released until after the two parties ratify the agreement,” said a statement from CUPE. “The union has scheduled a ratification vote for Wednesday, Oct. 18.”

CUPE Local 387 represents more than 800 employees with the City of New Westminster, including library workers and civilian employees in the police department.

Last week, CUPE posted a notice on its website stating the employer had “continually refused to engage in meaningful discussions” about key issues, which had limited the progress in reaching a new contract. It scheduled a strike vote for Monday, Oct. 16.

After announcing the strike vote, the employer and the union scheduled bargaining sessions for last Friday and Saturday, as well as Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The Record has contacted CUPE regarding the results of Monday’s strike vote. More to come.
