Crafty Christmas help at the city library

Plenty of books on the shelves to help with holidays

Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of all those Christmas preparations?

Take a break from trolling the malls and try some fun Christmas crafts and goodies ideas from the New Westminster Public Library that you can make with your kids.

Getting in the mood for some gingerbread? Try It's a Gingerbread House: Bake It, Build it, Eat it! by Vera Williams. Less of a Martha Stewart type? No Bake Gingerbread Houses for Kids by Lisa Anderson is for you. You can also try gingerbread bears from Christmas Crafts: A Holiday Craft Book by Judith Corwin.

Looking for some easy crafts to get started?

Popsicle reindeer and icicle ornaments for the tree can be found in 175 Easy-to-do Christmas Crafts.

Merry Things to Make: Christmas Fun and Crafts by Diane Chekerzian has more great ideas. For an international flavour, check out Christmas Crafts from Around the World or Christmas Crafts, both by Judy Ann Sadler. Like the sound of an origami Christmas village? You can find it in Christmas Origami by Steve and Migumi Biddle.

Want to decorate the house? Christmas Trims Kids Can Make will get you started. Younger kids will enjoy making crisscross ornaments or pipe cleaner reindeer. Both can be found in Christmas Ornaments Kids Can Make by Kathy Ross. Other fun wire figures, froggy cardholders (and wild wrapping ideas) can be found in Christmas Creations by Anna Llimos.

Need a little humour to help get you through the holidays? Scaredy Squirrel Prepares for Christmas: A Safety Guide for Scaredies by Melanie Watt will have you and your kids in stitches.

Look for these Christmas programs at the library: Christmas storytimes, Wednesday and Thursday, December 12 and 13, at 10: 30 a.m.; Christmas stories and crafts, Friday, Dec. 14 at 3: 30 p.m.; and Christmas crafts, Saturday, Dec. 15, anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

All this and much, much more can be found at the New Westminster Public Library. See www. nwpl.ca for more.
