New Westminster police have proven that fighting crime isn’t all they’re good at.

The department recently donated the entire proceeds of its annual charity golf tournament, a whopping $20,500, to the Crossroads Hospice Society, according to a media release from the society.

This is the seventh year in a row the department has made a donation to the hospice society, which runs a hospice in Port Moody and provides end-of-life support to patients in New Westminster, Burnaby and the Tri-Cities. The annual donations are made in memory of New West Sgt. Keith Logan, who passed away in September 2007, a few months after he was diagnosed with cancer.

At the time, former councillor Betty McIntosh told The RecordLogan was a very colourful member of the police department. He was an avid bagpiper, who played with the Vancouver Police Pipe Band before joining the New Westminster Police Department.

To date, the department has donated more than $101,000 to the Crossroads Hospice Society to help with operating costs of the Inlet Centre Hospice in Port Moody.
