The City of New Westminster wants to ensure folks have no trouble finding the police station.

The city has applied to vary the sign bylaw requirement so it can erect two new signs at the New Westminster Police Service's building at 555 Columbia St. The former Canada Post building was built in 1955 and renovated in 2001 to accommodate the police station and to add 45 housing units on upper floors.

A staff report states that the New Westminster Police Service wants to update its entrance to the building and to enhance the public entrance and make it more visible - especially at night.

"A new canopy will wrap around the corner of the building, above the main entrance on Sixth Street and the universal access on Columbia Street," said the report. "The existing lighting will be replaced by new globe lights that are more suited to the age and style of the building and will give off more light."
