Remembrance Day is this coming Sunday, and the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra has planned a very special Remembrance Day concert for the Massey Theatre - very special for two reasons.
Apart from remembering those who have served their country, music director Jin "Jack" Zhang is also including A Salute to the Big Bands from the 1940s, according to the local arts promoter Tony Antonias.
Concert goers are promised an afternoon of great music made famous by the likes of Count Basie and his orchestra, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman - with such popular favourites as I'm Getting Sentimental Over You, Serenade in Blue, and Sing, Sing, Sing.
From the classical repertoire, maestro Zhang has chosen the exquisite Nimrod from Elgar's Enigma Variations, Glazunov's Autumn from the Seasons, Beer Barrel Polka, Sleigh Ride, Colonel Bogey March, Tico Tico and many more.
Organizers say it will be a great afternoon of music and an outstanding Remembrance Day concert by the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra.
The performance is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 11, at Massey Theatre.
Admission is by donation at the door. The orchestra season runs from September to May, and members represent every age from teens up to 70-plus.
