Cocktail reception for new 'Borough community centre

The City of New Westminster is celebrating the opening of its new Queensborough Community Centre with a cocktail reception on Friday.

The centre, which opened on May 21, includes a branch library, police work spaces, multipurpose rooms, an expanded fitness centre, a licensed childcare for children three to five years of age, a community kitchen and a living room with fireplace. The expansion and renovation to the existing facility cost $7.67 million.

A cocktail reception is taking place on Friday, June 7, when "community champions" who supported the development will be recognized. It will include appetizers, entertainment, tours and displays from 7 to 8: 30 p.m., followed by a dance. A limited number of tickets are available for $20 by calling 604-525-7388.

The opening of the city's first neighbourhood hub officially opens on Saturday, July 6 from noon to 4 p.m.

The free family event will include the unveiling of the new rain garden feature, a sampling of programs and services, displays, police and fire services demonstrations, crafts, entertainment and food available for purchase.

Purpose party

The Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families is inviting community members to help it celebrate a milestone.

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the society is holding a free street fair on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Hyack Square. The event includes food, games and entertainment aimed at folks of all ages.

"Purpose Society celebrates 30 years of inspiring change and supporting children, youth and families in the areas of health, education, childcare, counselling and skill development," states a press release. "Please come out and take part in the festivities."
