Close out the year with fun events

It's time to wind down from the Christmas holidays - and gear up for the new year. We're continuing our popular feature, Our Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend. Here are The Record staff's suggestions for the Dec. 28 to 30 weekend.

It's time to wind down from the Christmas holidays - and gear up for the new year. We're continuing our popular feature, Our Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend. Here are The Record staff's suggestions for the Dec. 28 to 30 weekend.

Take in an annual post-Christmas tradition in New Westminster when 1the Herb House tournament takes to the ice at Queen's Park and Moody Park arenas. Drop by the arenas Dec. 27 to 30 and watch some fine hockey in the 16-team midget tourney.

Check out the action on 2 the floor at the Douglas College's men's volleyball invitational, which runs Dec. 28, 29 and 30 at the New Westminster campus (700 Royal Ave.) Lower Mainland college and university teams will be joined by teams from Vancouver Island University, Grand Prairie College and Red Deer College. Games will be played at 10 a.m., 12: 15 p.m., 2: 15 p.m., 4: 15 p.m. and 6: 15 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

3 Make room for the new sports equipment that Santa dropped off and donate your old gear to KidSport New West, which will be holding a used equipment sale in the spring.

In addition to giving folks an inexpensive way to outfit their kids for sports, the sale raises funds that allow KidSport to provide grants that help kids take part in organized sports when funding would normally prevent their participation.

Sports equipment can be dropped off at the Hyack Festival Association office (204 Sixth St.) Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or at Key West Ford (301 Stewardson Way) Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, visit www.kidsportnewwest.ca.

Enjoy a laugh at Lafflines 4Comedy Club, where Vancouver-based standup comic Carter Hortie performs on Friday, Dec. 28 and Saturday, Dec. 29. For tickets and information, visit www. lafflines.com.

Unwind after the busy 5 Christmas festivities and treat yourself to a spa treatment at one of the businesses around town. There are plenty of places where you can enjoy a manicure, pedicure or massage.
