It's another feather in her cap.

Candice James, New Westminster's poet laureate and president of the Federation of B.C. Writers, has once again been recognized for her contributions to the literary landscape; this time with the 2013 Distinguished Poet Award and the Dr. Asha Bhargava Memorial Award from the Writers International Network of Canada.

This award is bestowed annually upon a writer who is recommended by friends and fellow writers for being a "most deserving, focused and inspiring person," according to an email from Ashok K. Bhargava, president of the writers network.

James received many recommendations from those who "believe her to be a passionate writer who is dedicated to originality and creativity, as well as having a cheerful nature and upbeat personality."

She will receive her award at the second Literary Festival at the Richmond Cultural Centre in March.

Try tap for a toe-tickling time

It's going to be a spec-tap-ular weekend at the West Coast Tap Dance Collective AGM and party on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The group will hold its meeting at 6 p.m., and everyone is invited to the DeTap@DeDutch dance party starting at 7 p.m. at the DeDutch restaurant at 102 - 1035 Columbia St.

Guests with tap shoes can take advantage of the sprung floor and everyone can enjoy tapas (get it?), as well as live music, guest artists, tap demos and lessons.

Information about where to take lessons or watch tap dancing in the Lower Mainland will also be available, as well as opportunities to learn more about this unique style of dance and maybe even join the collective.

A cash bar and door prizes - including a new pair of tap shoes - will also be on offer.

Tickets are $15 at the door, or in advance at DanceCraft, 604-590-1733.

Fundraiser held at Massey

Music can make you feel good and lift your spirit.

Of course, when the music is live and for a good cause, it's impossible not to feel buoyed by the experience.

On Feb. 10, Vancouver Urban Ministries presents Tenore - the tenor trio that includes Canadian Idol top-five finalist Shane Wiebe, from Abbotsford - at Massey Theatre from 4 to 6 p.m.

The performance is a fundraiser for one-on-one therapeutic after-school programs for underprivileged children with learning disabilities.

Performing numbers from their latest album, Sing! Presents Tenore, the three will sing hymns and classical pieces accompanied by an experienced pianist from Victoria.

Tenore was the winner of the 2011 3GMA Covenant Awards for Best Classical/Traditional Album of the Year, Best Classical/Traditional Song of the Year, and the Blessings Fan Choice Award.

Tickets are $25, $35 or $45, plus service charges, available at tickets.masseytheatre.com, or by phone at 604-521-5050.
