City urges TransLink to keep Taxi Saver

New Westminster city council is urging TransLink to continue supporting the Taxi Saver program.

New Westminster city council is urging TransLink to continue supporting the Taxi Saver program.

TransLink had announced it was cutting its Taxi Saver program and reinvesting the funds in HandyDART services, but later indicated it would consult with affected groups. The program provides a 50 per cent subsidy on the cost of taxi coupons to eligible users of HandyDART.

Mayor Wayne Wright is pleased that the program is being reviewed.

"In New Westminster we have many people who need it," he said. "Personally, I have been 100 per cent trying to keep that alive."

New Westminster city council has approved a recommendation from the city's special services and access committee to "strongly support" the continuation of the program because it's widely used and depended upon by some New Westminster residents. The motion approved by council states that the service is essential and provides needed transportation for persons with disabilities and provides urgent short-notice service, including to areas where transit isn't available.
