City seeks tech grant from IBM

New Westminster is aiming to become a smart city.

New Westminster is aiming to become a smart city.

The City of New Westminster will apply for a grant through the IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant program, which distributes $50 million worth of technology and services to 100 municipalities around the world.

"The potential here is up to one-half million dollars," said Coun. Bill Harper.

A working group comprised of city staff, councils and school district representatives recently met to explore New Westminster's participation in the project.

"The city participation in the IBM Smarter Cities Challenge will provide a unique opportunity to have leading systems experts identify options to improve outcomes for active and smart transportation, thus enhancing the long-term health for youth and adults," said a staff report.
