City police launch new online app

New Westminster Police Department gets web savvy with new online app

In the same month that it launched a revamped new website, officially changed its name from police service to police department and dove head first into the world of social media, the New Westminster Police Department is offering up yet another tool for the public.

The police department announced on July 13 that it has joined www.CrimeReports. com, a service which provides public access to neighbourhood crime data in real time.

Citizens will have free access to neighborhood crime data through the New Westminster Police Department website and through an iPhone app.

"Providing reliable, timely information to our citizens is one of our top priorities because an informed public is a safer public," said Chief Const. Dave Jones. "(This partnership) gives us the ability to keep the public informed on a regular basis as to what is going on in the community."

The public can access the crime data by clicking on the crime maps icon on the police department's website at www. nwpolice.org, by going to www. CrimeReports.com, or by downloading the CrimeReports iPhone app, available for free in the Apple iTunes store.

The new service also lets local citizens sign up for free customizable email updates.

The police announced at the end of June that it is now officially the New Westminster Police Department, which brings it in line with other city departments.

The police also announced that they have updated their social media platforms.

Find them on Facebook by searching for New Westminster Police or find them on Twitter @NewWestPD.
