City police investigate shooting by RCMP

A Tuesday afternoon shooting incident in West Kelowna will be investigated by members of the New Westminster Police Department.

A Tuesday afternoon shooting incident in West Kelowna will be investigated by members of the New Westminster Police Department.

While the West Kelowna RCMP will be maintaining most aspects of the case, an external police force, in this case, New Westminster, has been brought in for a separate investigation to look into the RCMP's use of force in relation to the injuries sustained by a 19-year-old woman during the incident.

Two New Westminster police detectives arrived in West Kelowna Tuesday evening to conduct their investigation.

The incident occurred at approximately 1: 30 p.m. when members of the West Kelowna RCMP tried to pull over a green Dodge minivan.

While police followed the vehicle in an attempt to pull it over, the three people in the minivan - two men and a woman - are alleged to have started shooting at the police.

An hour-long car chase from West Kelowna then ensued, with the three suspects changing vehicles and evading police until they crashed at Swan Lake near Vernon.

The RCMP released an update Wednesday on the three people involved in the incident.

The two men, 32 and 39, are being held on unrelated outstanding warrants and were scheduled to make a Thursday court appearance.

The 19-year-old woman suffered a nonlife-threatening gunshot injury and remained in hospital as of Thursday morning.

The five RCMP officers involved in the incident have been placed on restricted nonoperational duties until they have completed a fitness for duty assessment.
