City plans transportation

The City of New Westminster is updating its master transportation plan.

The City of New Westminster is updating its master transportation plan.

A staff report states that the long-range master transportation plan, prepared in 1998, still contains some plans that are relevant but has several aspects that require updating to reflect city, regional and provincial initiatives.

These include the downtown community plan, TransLink's Transport 2040 strategy, the pending replacement of the Pattullo Bridge, the provincial transit plan, Metro Vancouver's regional growth strategy and Gateway projects involving Highway 1, Port Mann Bridge and South Fraser Perimeter Road.

The transportation plan update is expected to take about 16 months.

The engineering department's 2011 and 2012 work plan includes work on updating the plan.

The city has retained Urban Systems Ltd. to prepare the master transportation plan, a company that was involved in the 1998 plan.

The staff report noted that the 2009 Ipsos Reid community survey indicated that the city is seen as being walkable, but 32 per cent of residents stated that transportation-related concerns are the greatest issue facing the city.
