New Westminster city council has cleared the way for a health clinic at Royal City Centre.
Council has approved a development permit for 610 Sixth St. that will allow an elevator to be built on Princess Street. It will provide direct access for patients attending a kidney dialysis clinic at the health clinic that's being established by the Fraser Health Authority.
Jim Hurst, a development planner with the city, said the design was created because rooftop access to the clinic wasn't doable. He said the proposed locations work out perfectly because it takes patients directly into the health clinic, rather than through the mall.
According to Hurst, the general public won't have access to the elevator.
"It's coded," he said. "It's only for the patients and drivers."
A staff report stated that buses cannot access the mall elevator in the underground parking because of the height of the buses. Many of the dialysis patients arrive by HandiDART.
