It's going to cost a bit more money to enjoy some of New Westminster's parks and recreation services.

City council recently approved a staff recommendation to increase some fees and charges by up to 2.5 per cent, effective Sept. 1.

"The proposed 2.5 per cent change reflects inflationary and collective agreement increases," said a staff report. "In many cases, existing fees are at market value and are not recommended to change."

According to the staff report, departmental fees haven't been adjusted since July 2010. Staff believes it's prudent to have a modest adjustment at this time, as it will help avoid significant price adjustments in the future.

Examples of fees that will increase include room rentals at local facilities, ice rental at local arenas, skating and swimming lessons, fitness classes and rental of picnic shelters in local parks.

The city will not be increasing fees for a number of services, including public skating and public swimming, drop-in gymnastic programs and adults' drop-in sports at the Arenex.
