The City of New Westminster has cancelled its second annual Amazing Disaster Rally because of low registration.

The event, which promotes emergency and safety preparedness by having cyclists work their way through a 25-kilometre route with various checkpoints along the way, was scheduled for May 9.

"We had some people apply, but every one said they were busy, and it's Mother's Day weekend," said organizer Cory Hansen.

To make it worth their while, Hansen said they needed at least 30 people to sign up, but only about a dozen did.

"It takes a lot of work and energy to put it on, and a lot of volunteer help," she added. "I'm very disappointed, but you can't predict these things. It happens."

Last year, the rally was also held on the Mother's Day weekend, but it was so popular that there was a waitlist. Anticipating similar interest in 2015, the organizing committee increased the number of participants from 50 to 75.

"The only other thing I could think of is maybe people thought we did it last year, and that it was the same, and they don't want to do it again," Hansen said. "We're going to sit down as a committee and reassess if this is something we want to do next year or if we're going to wait and do it, say every two years."

She told the Record Maple Ridge has shown interest in bringing the rally to their city, something Hansen plans to help with.
