Following the Hyack Festival parade on Saturday, May 26, the streets of New Westminster will be alive with music, food and lots of entertainment for the whole family.

The City of New Westminster is joining in the giant block party. This year, instead of visiting New Westminster City Hall for the annual open house, find us uptown at the corner of Sixth Street and Princess Street. Several city departments, including the library, will be there.

There will be city vehicles galore, including a backhoe, a dump truck, a garbage truck and the animal services vehicle from engineering. Emergency services will have their command vehicle, and there will be an electrical truck, a new fire engine and the alltime favourite, a Zamboni. Kids of all ages (even grownup kids) can enjoy exploring the trucks.

Then stop by the city tents. Parks, recreation and culture invites kids to make a craft about the trucks and have their face painted. At the library tent, make a craft and find out about the Summer Reading Club. It's also an excellent opportunity for everyone to learn more about ereaders and how to borrow free ebooks from the library.

The Uptown Live Festival, which is presented by Westminster Centre and the Royal City Centre, will run four live music stages from 1 to 5 p.m. (till 6 p.m. at River's Reach) and will feature a hot selection of Lower Mainland-based Indie bands, including the Zolas and We are the City.

The Kids Zone has its own stage with such popular acts as Cinemazoo, Courtney the Court Jester, children's performer Claire Brett and the "Harmonica Man" Keith Bennett.

The Kids Zone will also offer face painting, a climbing wall, inflatables like sumo wrestling and games, crafts and other cool kids stuff to do. The Vancouver Circus School will also set up by one of the main stages performing high-wire acts.
