Royal City residents are invited to explore naturopathic medicine at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine's annual open house.
The theme of this year's event is around the prevention and treatment of diabetes, heart disease and food allergies. The Oct.
13 event will feature free health testing and consultations, educational talks and information sessions for anyone interested in becoming a naturopathic doctor.
The open house is taking place on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Boucher Centre, which is located at 435 Columbia St.
Topics of the day's talks include: prospective student information session (10: 30 to 11: 45 a.m.); diabetes and heart disease (noon to 12: 50 p.m.); food allergies and gastrointestinal disorders (1 to 1: 50 p.m.); and hormones and stress (2 to 2: 50 p.m.). In addition, the event includes interactive presentations with students and faculty - hydrotherapy and botanical medicine, (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and nutrition, acupuncture and homeopathy (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
Visitors to the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine are able to take part in free assessments between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. These include: pinal assessments; zinc tally tests; blood pressure measuring; blood sugar testing; ABO blood typing; tongue and pulse diagnosis.
In addition, a limited number of free, 15-minute introductory health consultations are also available.

Seniors' and family festival on this weekend
The Seniors' and Family Festival is returning to Royal City Centre this weekend.
Local arts promoter Tony Antonias notes that an army of volunteers has been planning the second annual Seniors' and Family Festival. The event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 11 to 3 p.m. at Royal City Centre.
"I really hope that you can make it," Antonias said. "It is going to be a really nice, fun day.
The day's event includes entertainment by an Elvis impersonator and several youth musicians, a kids zone that includes face painting, clowns and a bouncy castle, door prizes and treats.
