Two youths celebrated the new year in police custody after an alleged run-in with a group of people in Moody Park.
At about 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, the two youths approached a group of people in Moody Park and attempted to steal a phone from one of the persons gathered. When the suspects were unable to steal the phone, they fled on foot. Officers were called to the area, and the suspects were arrested nearby, according to a media release from New Westminster Police.
Investigators believe the suspects ended up in Moody Park after fleeing the scene of another personal robbery at the Petro Canada gas station at 10th Avenue and Canada Way in Burnaby. It’s unclear whether the thieves got away with any stolen items during that robbery, Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the New Westminster Police, told the Record.
Both suspects are charged with two counts of robbery for the alleged incident in New Westminster and one count of robbery for the Burnaby incident. Accused are 18-year-old Abdi Bulle of Burnaby and a teenaged girl, whose named cannot be released as outlined in the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
“The adult male has been remanded in custody to appear before the courts, while the youth female suspect has been released with numerous conditions,” Scott said in the release.
Bulle was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 6, after press deadlines.
