Two men have been charged following a shooting at Queensborough Landing earlier this month.

New Westminster Police say the two accused were causing a disturbance at one of the shops at the local big box plaza on Jan. 15, when officers were called. Police were able to arrest one of the suspects without an incident, but an interaction with the other turned violent and shots were fired.

The suspect, 32-year-old Nathan McVannell, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has since been transferred from the hospital into custody, according to a press release from police.

He is charged with attempted murder; two counts of using a firearm for committing an indictable offence; aggravated assault; pointing a firearm; possessing a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition; wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer; and theft.

The suspect who was taken into custody initially, 31-year-old Henry Bennett Smith, is charged with breach of probation. He’s been released with conditions.

Police are still looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the shooting on Friday, Jan. 15. Anyone with information can contact Det. Cecil with the major crime unit at 604-525-5411.

“These are very complex investigations that require a lot of expertise, and information from witnesses is extremely valuable,” Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott said in the release.

Meanwhile, the Independent Investigations Office’s investigation into the police-involved shooting continues. Marten Youssef, spokesperson for the provincial watchdog, told the Record there was nothing new to report on Friday and that the investigation was ongoing.
