A chance meeting has led to a man raising money in the memory of his mother coming to New Westminster to pedal his heart out.

Starlight Casino general manager Stan Ma had a “random encounter” recently with Gary McKenzie, who is taking part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer from Aug. 24-25 - a 200-km journey through the Fraser Valley benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation.

McKenzieasked if he could use the Starlight for a Bike-A-Thon to raise funds.

McKenziewill be onsite riding a stationary bike from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, July 27,to raise as much money as he can ahead of the big ride in August. Starlight and its GatewayGIVES program will be matching funds raised up to $2,000.

“My story for doing this ride is because I lost my mother over 16 years ago,” McKenzie says on his fundraising page.“As with every cure for our ills, doctors and scientists have relied heavily on funding to find a cure. I would like to hope there will be a cure in my lifetime and cancer will be become a thing of the past.”
