BARGAIN HUNTING

With the arrival of spring, yard sales will be springing up around the Royal City.

New Westminster residents can get a jump on yard sale season by checking out the Century House Association's annual thrift sale, which features treasures such as clothing, small appliances, jewelry, kitchenware, knickknacks, books, records, plants and more. It takes place on Saturday, March 31 from 10: 30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

THRIFTY HELPS

Thrifty Foods has unveiled a campaign aimed at raising funds for 13 hospital foundations in B.C.

Several folks were on hand at the New Westminster store on Feb. 18 to promote the Help Out One Buck at a time campaign. From Feb. 15 to March 13, $1 from the sale of every four-pound bag of certified organic Buck Brand Navel Oranges will be donated to the hospital foundation nearest the Thrifty Foods store where the purchase was made.

"The Help Out One Buck at a Time campaign is great way to raise much-needed funds for the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation," said Adrienne Bakker, president and CEO of the foundation. "Each dollar raised will benefit our expansion for stroke, cardiac and aneurysm care at the hospital which will help individuals and families in B.C. communities for years to come."

The four-week campaign is expected to raise funds for the Royal Columbian, Delta, Peace Arch, Fraser Valley Health Care, Eagle Ridge and Lions Gate Hospital Foundations, as well as seven hospital foundations on Vancouver Island.

New Westminster Thrifty store manager Ray Mattinson, Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation board member John Ashbridge, Thrifty's manager of corporate partnerships Eleanor Ryrie, and cardiologist Dr. Jay Charania dropped by the Thrifty Foods in Sapperton to promote the Help Out One Buck at a Time fundraising campaign.

In addition to the One Buck at a Time campaign, Thrifty Foods raises funds for all 13 hospital foundations through its annual Pumpkins for Charity event that's held each October.

CLEANUP TIME

If you have any sentimental items on graves at the Fraser Cemetery, you may want to pick them up soon.

The City of New Westminster will be doing a spring cleaning at the cemetery beginning on March 19.

City staff will be removing items placed near grave markers in preparation for this season's grounds maintenance.

"Items such as boxes, shells, toys, tripods, trees, shrubs and plants are not permitted as per the cemetery bylaw - and will be removed," said a notice posted on the city's website.
