We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. This issue, we have the Hyack Festival kick off celebration, a multicultural fest at the quay, two gatherings for writers and a tap dancing show.

1 Bang on: Friday, May 18, marks the first day of the annual Hyack Festival. There will be an opening night celebration and fireworks, 7 to 11 p.m. The fireworks, which start at 10 p.m., will be set up on a barge in the Fraser River, directly in front of River Market at Westminster Quay.

There will also be live entertainment along the boardwalk. For more info, go to hyack. bc.ca.

2 More than tacos: Head down to the Westminster Quay for the 10th Annual DiverseCity Multicultural Festival on Saturday, May 19, from noon to 6 p.m. There will be various cultures showcase, with food and dance from around the world. For more info, go to www.downtownnewwest. ca.

3 Interested in writing? The New Westminster Writers group meets on Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. in the Plaskett Room at New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave. Members, many of whom have had work published, critique each other's work, and all genres welcome. The group is limited to 20 people, however, and there is a waiting list. Contact [email protected] to get on the list. There's a $35 annual fee, and the group meets 10 times a year. Because of the popularity of New Westminster Writers, they've created a spinoff group that meets Wednesdays at Renaissance Books, from 10 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m. It's $5 to attend and includes refreshments. Both groups have guest writers who attend.

4 Check out Poetic Justice at the Heritage Grill this Sunday, May 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. There are generally two to three featured poets and an open mike following that. This Sunday will feature Fran Bourassa. People are welcome to bring their work. It's a very friendly, warm place to read you writing, and the group welcomes new writers. The Heritage Grill is at 447 Columbia St., and they meet in the back room. No admission.

5 Swing by the Massey Theatre on Saturday, May 19, to check out Tapestry, a 10th anniversary Tap Day Show, presented by the West Coast Tap Dance Collective. The show is at 7: 30 p.m. Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. Info: 604-521-5050 or www.masseytheatre.com. Tickets $28, inclusive of service charges.
