Summer is officially here, and so there's no better time to get out and about to take in some of New Westminster's awesome community offerings. We're continuing with our popular feature, The Record's Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend for June 21 to 23.
Shred your unwanted paperwork by donation at the New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society's shred-athon. Community members and businesses are invited to bring confidential papers in a box and have them shredded on site. The event takes place on Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Canada Games Pool parking lot at 65 East Sixth Ave. The shred-athon also features a barbecue, popcorn and live music.
Clear out clutter and take your empty cans and bottles to the 12th New Westminster Scouts bottle drive that's taking place at the New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society's shred-athon. Donations of returnable cans and bottles will help local youth who are joining their peers from across Canada at the Canadian Jamboree in Sylvan Lake, Alta. The event is on Saturday, June 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canada Games Pool parking lot, but if you'd prefer that the Scouts pick up bottles before or during the event, email scouts [email protected].
Enjoy the sights and sounds that are part of the Queensborough Children's Festival, featuring the Megan's Place Teddy Bear Picnic. The event takes place on Saturday, June 22 from 11: 30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Ryall Park, 920 Ewen Ave. The free event features live entertainment, a teddy bear picnic and games for children.
Support local business and make some new friends along the way. The second Cash Mob New West is set for Saturday, June 22. Participants will meet at Hyack Square at 3 p.m. and descend en masse on a local business. It's been suggested that people bring a minimum of $20 to spend. For more information, visit the Cash Mob New West page on Facebook.
Check out the exhibit by artist Kim Soo Goodtrack in the Arts Council Gallery in Queen's Park. The show, which wraps up June 29, promises to be an explosion of colour. Goodtrack said it's important to hold on to the good when it comes to First Nation's culture, and notes that there's so much good to share as it's a culture that's rich with wisdom, spirit and beauty. Goodtrack's award-wining book, seen on Sesame Street, is also available at the gallery located in Centennial Lodge in Queen's Park. The gallery is open daily from 1 to 5 p.m. (closed Mondays).
