The afternoon of live poetry readings will be hosted by Alan Hill and will also feature poets Lilija Valis and Cristy Watson. There is also an open mike section during the event, which runs 3 to 5 p.m. at the Heritage Grill, at 447 Columbia St. For more information, visit www.poeticjustice.ca.

Last Monday

On June 24, the Arts Council of New Westminster is presenting the film Quartet, directed by Dustin Hoffman, and starring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay and Billy Connolly. The 2012 British comedy-drama focuses on a group of seniors at a home for retired musicians, where the annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean, an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents. Showtime is 7: 30 p.m., and the movie runs 98 minutes. Tickets are $9 at the door, 735 Eighth Ave. Season passes are now available at the early bird price of $60 for the next season of Last Monday at the Movies - September 2013 to June 2014. The passes will be available at the box office or at the Arts Council office between 1 and 5 p.m., Tuesday to Friday.

Quay concerts

What better way to celebrate Canada Day than with some live music and fireworks on the Royal City's waterfront?

The Hyack Festival Association will kick of its second-annual Concerts on the Quay series on July 1 with singer-song writer Wil, plus Big World Band, Dominique Fricot and Rich Hope.

The music starts at 5 p.m. and goes to 9 p.m. with fireworks to follow, on the Westminster Quay boardwalk. For more info, visit www.hyack.bc.ca.
