Calling all Baby Boomers

The City of New Westminster is calling on Baby Boomers for their input.

Two meetings are being held on Tuesday, Oct. 11 to get input from people aged 50 to 65 about their wants and needs. A group of Century House staff and members has been meeting since the fall of 2010 and talking about the needs of the Baby Boomers, who are those folks born between 1946 and 1964.

"We are targeting that group of people from a perspective of Century House, but also New Westminster parks, culture and recreation: What kinds of things are going on for you? What type of opportunities are you looking for?," said Shelly Schnee, recreation programmer at Century House. "It's just to have a discussion."

The sessions are taking place in two locations: Queensborough Community Centre at 920 Ewen Ave. and Centennial Community Centre at 65 East Sixth Ave. Registration takes place from 5: 45 to 6 p.m., and the sessions run from 6 to 7: 30 p.m.

"We want to make sure we know what Baby Boomers are thinking and talking about in New West," Schnee said.

Participants will be divided into small groups and will discuss a number of questions, such as what's on their "leisure bucket list" for the future.

New Westminster resident Elizabeth Philip believes the process is very worthwhile. She encourages people to attend.

"Now is the time to put a voice in and get your ideas in," she said.

PUMPKIN TIME

It's October, which means Derrick Thornhill is hard at work planning for his annual pumpkin patch.

Thornhill, a real estate agent with Park Georgia Realty, will be holding his annual pumpkin patch on Saturday, Oct. 15 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Queen's Park picnic shelter. Residents are invited to drop by and pick one of the thousand or so pumpkins that will be scattered around the picnic area, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or coffee and some Timbits provided by the Tim Hortons community cruiser.

The event also features pumpkin carving, a colouring contest, a "guess the pumpkin weight" contest and free popcorn and grab bags. Guests are invited to wear their cutest, scariest or most original costume; prizes will be awarded and complimentary photos will be taken.

The event is free, but donations are accepted in support of Monarch Place, a transition house for women and children fleeing domestic violence. The event runs rain or shine.
