New Westminster police (NWPD) say a 27-year-old Calgary man is facing four charges in relation to an incident at a local business.
Gima Deng was taken into custody last Tuesday (July 26) after multiple witnesses reported a suspect committing assault and damage inside an undisclosed business.
In a release, Sgt. Justine Thom explains police received a call that described an assault taking place inside a New West business around 7 p.m. on July 26.
Witnesses told police the man threatened staff while inside and there were sounds of breaking glass.
When officers arrived, they found an individual matching the suspect's description standing in the 600-block Columbia Street.
The suspect was arrested and held in custody inside the NWPD cells.
Thom says four charges have been approved against Deng, including:
- One count of assault causing bodily harm contrary to Section 267 (b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- One count of uttering threats contrary to Section 264.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada
- One count of mischief contrary to Section 420 (4) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- One count of causing a disturbance contrary to Section 175 (1) of the Criminal Code of Canada
"This behavior is not tolerated in our community," Thom added.
"I want to remind all business owners and staff, if you ever feel unsafe, call 9-1-1 and we will be there."
