Royal City residents can help local organizations fighting to keep people off the streets and stay warm at the same time.
The annual Toque Tuesday fundraiser returns to New Westminster on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Since Raising the Roof launched the campaign 18 years ago, it’s raised more than $24 million for programs aimed at helping to address long-term solutions for homelessness
Wesley Everaars, director of development for the Lookout Emergency Aid Society, said volunteers will be stationed at the SkyTrain stations in New Westminster from 6 a.m. until later in the afternoon.
“It allows us to raise awareness and bring the complexities of homelessness to the greater public, to have an understanding that in a country like Canada, we should no longer have people living on the street,” he said. “There really are those in need and can use the extra services that come to them through the toque campaign.”
Locally, the Pacific Community Resources Society and the Lookout Emergency Aid society will split the proceeds to use on housing and support services for those in need. Toques are $10, pompom tuques are $20 and mittens are $20.
