Bring a bully to the Quay this Canada Day

Embrace the bullies: A dozen or so bull terriers - nicknamed bullies for short - and their owners will descend on the Quay on Canada day for the inaugural "bully walk." The outing was inspired by a similar event that occurs in Surrey on New Year's Day. Above, a group shot of all the 2016 "bullies" and their companions at Crescent Beach.

But it’s not what you think.

A group of dog owners and their bull terriers – also known as bullies – are hosting a meet-up in the New West neighbourhood.

“It’s very casual. It’s not structured, except, let’s go for a walk with our dogs,” resident and organizer Scott Larsen told the Record. “Actually, we follow the dogs.”

Larsen said after attending a similar event with his husband at Surrey's Crescent Beach, held every year on New Year’s Day, the thought occurred to him to start something locally.

“I think it’s a great mid-summer event,” he added. “At Crescent Beach, we do the gathering at the park, then we walk, and of course, everyone is watching us, like oh my god, what are all these dogs? Then afterwards, some of us broke for lunch after the walk. Others went home.”

Larsen, owner of a nine-year-old bull terrier named Skye, said the meet-up is a great opportunity to educate people about the breed. Often times, people confuse bull terriers with pit bulls, he noted, adding “bull terriers are friendly to other people and kids.”

The 15 or so bullies will be coming from all over the Lower Mainland for the Canada Day walk. The plan is to first gather at the east parking lot, located east of the Discovery Centre, at 1 p.m. The group will then decide whether to stroll over to Westminster Pier Park or walk along the Quayside esplanade. Everyone is welcome to attend.
