Boucher Institute has submitted a proposal to the city to create a demonstration botanical garden at the riverfront park. Council has directed staff to develop a licence agreement between the city and Boucher Institute for the use of a portion of the park for the garden, which would showcase medicinal plants that are used in the practice of naturopathic medicine.

"It was felt the garden would not only help to educate the public about naturopathic medicine, medicinal plants and gardening, but also contribute to the urban landscape and create an attractive feature that would serve as a positive amenity for community members and visitors to New Westminster," stated a staff report.

Oregano, astragalus, thyme, echinacea, barberry, garlic, wild indigo, lemon balm, lavender, peppermint, marigold and chamomile are examples of the botanicals that will be used in the demonstration garden. Boucher Institute will pay for all costs associated with the garden.

Coun. Lorrie Williams said New Westminster is becoming the naturopathic centre for British Columbia. Boucher Institute, which is located at 435 Columbia St., is Western Canada's only accredited naturopathic medical college.

Williams said the demonstration garden has the potential of attracting people from around the province.

"Hopefully it will draw lots of tourists and people who want to learn about naturopathy," she said. "

Coun. Betty McIntosh said the garden is an excellent opportunity for a partnership between the city and the Boucher Institute.
