New West’s major crime unit is investigating after a body was found in a car on fire Wednesday evening.

Police were called to help firefighters with a vehicle fire in the area in the 1000 block of Fourth Avenue around 6:45 p.m. last night. When the fire was extinguished, first responders found a body inside the car.

Officers with the department’s major crime unit are now in the initial stages of their investigation, trying to determine whether foul play was a factor or not, Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott told the Record.

It’s unclear at this time if the body inside of the vehicle was that of the registered owner as investigators await an ID, Scott added.

The car was parked on the street in an area surrounded by low-rise apartment buildings.

More information is expected later today. Stay tuned.
