The folks at St. Barnabas Church have big hearts when it comes to helping those less fortunate.

The church offers a number of outreach programs including a community lunch and an emergency food cupboard. It's hosting a fundraising lunch on Sunday to support its outreach programs and provide meals and food to those in need.

The Small Change - Big Hearts fundraising lunch is taking place on June 10 at noon at the St. Barnabas parish hall at 1010 Fifth Ave. The event will also feature a raffle for several gift baskets.

Tickets for the luncheon are $10 for adults and $5 for children. People are also encouraged to bring their piggy banks - because every little bit adds up.

The fundraising lunch is being held in celebration of the Patronage Festival of St. Barnabas; June 11 is the Feast Day of Saint Barnabas, a day set aside in Christian custom to commemorate St. Barnabas.

Tickets are available at the door or by calling the church at 604-525-6646.

SAPPERTON DAY

Organizers of the 2012 Sapperton Day street festival are inviting Royal City residents to join them in celebrating the beginning of summer.

The festival, organized by the Sapperton Business Association with some help from local businesses and Wesgroup Properties, is enjoying its 10th consecutive year, after returning from a short hiatus.

Sapperton Days has been around since the early 1970s.

The festival takes place on Sunday, June 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the 400 block of East Columbia Street. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the festival, which features live entertainment, bouncy castles, clowns, games, mini doughnuts, a pancake breakfast, a rock-climbing wall, vendors and more.

All proceeds raised at the Sapperton Day street festival will be donated to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation and will be used for critically needed equipment, research and innovation. Last's year's festival raised $12,000 that was donated to the foundation.

CADET REVIEWS

Royal City residents are invited to attend two upcoming cadet reviews.

Mayor Wayne Wright will be attending the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Fraser's 70th annual ceremonial review on Sunday, June 10 at 12: 30 p.m. The mayor will act as the reviewing officer for the parade that celebrates the end of the training year for 50 cadets from New Westminster, Delta and Burnaby.

The parade and displays are open to the public. Guests are asked to arrive by 12: 30 p.m., and the parade and displays will begin at 1 p.m. at the training facility at 444 Derwent Way, Delta, on Annacis Island.

The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corp Fraser encourages any youth aged 12 to 18 who are interested in the cadet program to stop by the training facility. For more information, visit www.joinseacadets.ca.

The cadets and staff of 2316 Royal Westminster Regiment Army Cadets Corps are holding their 64th annual cadet review on Monday, June 11 at the Armoury at 530 Queens Ave.

Because the parade will get underway at 7 p.m., people are asked to be seated by 6: 45 p.m.

While the dress for the ceremony will be DEU (distinct environmental uniform, which is the current uniform of the Canadian Forces) for military personnel, it's business casual for others attending the event.

Following the parade and demon-stration, there will be light refreshments and a chance to meet and greet the staff and cadets.

"The annual cadet review will be a parade, inspection, awards and march-past followed by displays, demonstrations and a light reception," said an email from Capt. Bob Chessell. "The public is cordially invited to attend."

Like the Sea Cadets, army cadets are a youth organization open to boys and girls aged 12 to 18 years of age. The cadets are jointly sponsored by the Department of National Defence and the Army Cadet League of Canada.
