A trades training program at New Westminster Secondary School is get-ting a big boost from BCIT.
The post-secondary school recently offered to donate a large amount of construction tools to the high school's apprenticeship programs.
"They could have sold the tools that they are replacing as second-hand tools. They just chose to pay it forward," said Karen Crosby, career programs coordinator at NWSS.
The Ace-it program gives students a head start on training for the trades. The donated tools will benefit students in the carpentry program.
Currently, there are 16 students in the program, Crosby said.
She is delighted with the donation, which includes woodworking and larger-scale tools and equipment.
NWSS TAKES PART IN CANSTRUCTION DESIGN EVENT
Construction of another kind got a boost at New Westminster Secondary School.
Students at the school recently participated in CANstruction.
It's an event where architects, engineers and students from all over Metro Vancouver design and build sculptures made entirely out of cans," wrote Anne Magrata, one of the leaders of the CANstruction project, in an email to The Record."All the cans that were used were donated to the local food bank. The theme for CANstruction this year was arts and animation."
The structure local students chose to build was Optimus Prime, as a robot and a truck, and the jet version of Starscream.
"We donated about 5,500 cans of tuna. With this, New Westminster Secondary School was presented with the Can-Do Award," Magrata wrote.
