B.C. wins silver at junior and senior nationals

British Columbia missed out on the gold medal at the Baseball Canada 21-and-under junior championships in Dartmouth, N.S. The B.C. team, including infielder Tyler Yorko and pitchers Dan Altoe and Douglas Strohan of Burnaby, fell 13-3 to Ontario in the championship final on Aug. 19.

B.C. trailed Ontario 3-2 after the first inning and 5-3 after three before the Central Canadians blew open the game with a seven-run fifth, in which B.C. committed a colossal 11 errors.

Earlier in the day, Yorko scored a run and batted in another in B.C.'s 7-1 semifinal win over Nova Scotia to advance to the gold-medal game.

Altoe recorded the win with a four-hitter, going five and one-third innings, while striking out six batters.

In pool play, B.C. gave up just three runs in four games, including a 4-0 win over Quebec.

Yorko finished the tournament with a .250 batting average, including four runs and three hits. The

B.C. second baseman also placed second overall in fielding with seven putouts and 13 assists.

Altoe posted a tournament 1.11 earned run average, striking out eight batters while recording a win and a save.

Second again B.C. took home a second silver medal following a 3-1 loss to host Windsor, Ont. at the senior championships on Sunday. Windsor scored the game-winning runs in the top of the second inning and another in the third, despite 10 strikeouts from Surrey starter Jesse Peters, who went the distance on the mound for B.C. In the semifinal, B.C. eked out a 1-0 win over Manitoba on a two-out, bases-loaded walk-off single by Peters in the bottom of the ninth inning that brought in Scott Webster of Burnaby for the game-winning run.

On Aug. 24, B.C. had an easier time of it, beating the hosts 10-0 on the strength of a five-run first inning.

Webster, who had a hit, two runs batted in and scored a run in the game, batted in the opening run with two men on base in the top of the first.
