Author and educator Barry MacDonald will be offering his tips on parenting boys at a seminar in New Westminster this month.
Boys and girls approach life with differing needs, differing abilities and differing goals and gender is one of the great organizing principles in child's development, according to a media release on the event.
The release outlined some of the challenges that boys face: they account for 90 per cent of juvenile alcohol and drug violations, they make up about 80 per cent of school suspensions and expulsions, and they make up two thirds of students in special education.
Drawing on studies from cultural and biological-based understandings of how children grow and develop, the author of the best-selling books Boy Smarts and Boys on Target: Raising Boys into Men of Courage and Compassion, and founder of the MentoringBoys.com website, will help parents, teachers and caregivers understand how gender patterns influence boys as they grow and develop, the release said.
The event is being held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth St.
Tickets are $10 until Nov. 20 and $12 at the door (if still available).
Tickets are available online at www.masseytheatre.com, by phone at 604-521-5050 or at the Massey box office.
