Aunt Leah's Place wants to provide a safe and supportive environment for mothers and their babies at Threshholds House.

The city has received a rezoning application to develop transitional housing at 307 Boyne St. in Queensborough, where the non-profit organization would provide housing for four mothers and their babies.

A staff report states the proposal would provide new mothers and their babies with safe, secure and subsidized housing for up to two years, during which time the mothers would receive support and access to off-site programming.

"The proposal is consistent with the official community plan and supports goals in the affordable housing and homelessness action strategies," stated a preliminary staff report to council. "However, a rezoning is required as the existing zoning does not permit the proposed use."

Staff stated the application will be presented to the community for public input, and will be reviewed by city departments and the advisory planning commission.

Aunt Leah's Place is a registered society that seeks to prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless, and to help mothers in need from losing custody of their children. The society's head office is located in New Westminster.
