A New Westminster man has his cellphone back thanks to some quick police work early this morning.

At about 12:30 a.m. on June 20, the 23-year-old victim was walking in the 600-block of 20th St. when another man allegedly attacked him from behind, punching him in the head, according to a media release from the New Westminster Police Department.

The suspect fled on foot when a "passerby stopped to see what was occurring," the release states.

The passerby helped the victim to a safe place and then called the police and emergency services. The victim was taken to a hospital where he received stitches to one of his ears, according to the release.

Back at the scene, responding officers fanned out in the surrounding area and after about 10 minutes of searching they found the suspect in the 1400-block of Sixth Ave. Police recovered the victim's cellphone and arrested the suspect, according to the release.

Surrey resident Scott Andrew Duncan has been charged with robbery and will remain in custody until his court appearance on June 24 in New Westminster.
