A 25-year-old man is in custody facing multiple charges after a New Westminster police officer spotted him driving an allegedly stolen vehicle Wednesday morning.

According to a press release, at about 3:40 a.m. on Aug. 6, a local patrol officer was cruising near the Burnaby-New Westminster border when he decided to check out a residence police describe as “problematic” about two blocks into Burnaby in the 7700 block of Sixth Street.

On a hunch, the officer did a quick patrol of the area, spotting a black 1998 Volkswagen Jetta, which had been reported stolen in New West earlier, the release stated.

According to police, the lone occupant of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and taken into custody without incident.

“This is a classic example of a cross jurisdictional crime,” Staff Sgt. Paul Hyland said in the release. “Criminals don’t abide by police boundaries, so we are actively engaged with the Burnaby RCMP in focusing on this residence and its occupants whom we believe are committing crime in both Burnaby and New Westminster.”

Surrey resident Wesley Dean Rideout appeared in New Westminster court Wednesday and was officially charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000.

He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Aug. 13.
